영국 잉글랜드 지역의 항구 도시 브리스틀(Bristol)에 있는 공립 종합대학교. 여러 대학평가기관이 매긴 각종 순위에서 유럽 10위 안에 이름을 올리고 있음. 또한 이 학교 출신으로 노벨상을 수상한 동문이 11명에 이르는, 영국 최고의 명문 학교 가운데 하나. 브리스틀 대학교의 전신은 1876년 설립된 브리스틀 유니버시티칼리지(University College, Bristol). 당시 이 학교는 영국에서 남녀 학생 모두에게 평등하게 대학 입학 자격을 줬던 영국 유일의 학교였음. 1893년 브리스틀 의과대학(Bristol Medical School)과 합병. 1909년 5월 영국 왕실로부터 칙허장(Royal charter)을 받으면서 공립대학교가 됨. 이때 교명이 지금의 브리스톨 대학교로 바뀌었음. 1929년 윈스턴 처칠(Winston Churchill, 1874~1965)이 이 대학의 세 번째 총장으로 취임했음. 1960년대 브리스틀 대학교는 영국에서 활발하게 벌어졌던 학생운동의 중심지 역할을 했음. 2002년 스포츠센터를, 2009년 나노과학·퀀텀정보센터(Centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information)를 각각 설립했음. 브리스틀 대학교는 예술인문학부, 공학부, 약학·치의학부, 사회과학·법학부, 의학·수의학부, 과학부 등 모두 6개 학부, 54개 학과로 구성되어 있음.
